With Christmas just around the corner, you’re likely inundated with sweet treats galore, but nothing is as sweet as the cake I’m about to tell you about. Tip: Get your orders in by Saturday for Christmas pick up!!!
Lisa Power and her family opened Lisa’s Rum Cakes On July 1, 2009 in Gilbert, AZ where they serve up a variety of rum cakes stuffed with fruit, cream, and over the top flavors. Over the past decade their bakery evolved from shipping to all 50 states, to focusing on Arizona customers….yay for us!
Lisa and family are no strangers to the bakery industry, as Lisa’s mother Cathy started Cathy’s Rum Cake and Catering on November 5, 1975. I can distinctly remember eating Cathy’s cakes growing up, as the bakery was just around the corner from where I lived. Imagine my joy when I found out the nostalgic cakes are still available and yummy as ever!
Lisa worked alongside her mom from day one and was in charge of the entire cake department. She oversaw all the production, cake decorating, ordering, and customer service. Over time, the family recipe for Italian custard-filled cakes became an iconic dessert in the valley, serving celebrities, politicians, and public figures.
To this day, the bakery is a labor of love and Lisa stays busy answering phones and managing customer service. Knowing there was a demand and opportunity for more people to try the cake, they created Cake CUTS®, which are individual slices of the famous dessert. CUTS can be found around the valley at local restaurants, wine bars, and coffee shops, as well as daily in store. Trust me guys, if you live outside of Chandler/Gilbert…it’s worth the drive! Another great product they offer is the Cake Pie, which is made with a single layer of cake instead of crust. They have transformed Cathy’s Rum Cake from an occasional dessert to a dessert for any occasion.
Beyond the new products, making the rum cake on-demand, and expanding Cathy’s original menu to over 70 flavors, the most important part is how Lisa and family have utilized modern technology and social media to bring their time-honored family tradition to the 21st century. It’s pretty incredible!
My favorite cake is the best seller, which is a yellow cake filled with rum custard and sliced strawberries. It’s truly one of the best things I’ve ever tasted! Some other fun flavors include seasonal peppermint, amaretto, chocolate banana, maple, marble, cookies and cream, and a beautiful Italian Cannoli cake stuffed with chocolate chips.
So this season (and all year long!) forego the traditional fruit cake or birthday cake and hit up Lisa’s Rum Cake. I’m certain you will be a life long customer just like me!
