Get slurping today because it’s National Oyster Day and I am sharing the perfect place to celebrate- Modern Oysterbar Chophouse. The locally owned restaurant features an impressive oyster bar and various preparations for the delicate seafood. Located just south of the Scottsdale/Shea intersection, the upscale venue is tucked in behind California Pizza Kitchen and features 6,000 square feet of pure elegance.
The bar at Modern Oysterbar Chophouse is an impressive mix of beautiful liquor bottles, an extensive wine collection, and drinks that are both delicious and Instagram worthy gorgeous. Speaking of wine- if you ask the GM to pair wines with each course, he won’t steer you wrong! This guy knows his stuff.
Back to the oysters- Did you know there are over 100 different species of oysters? Interestingly, oysters tend to take on the characteristics of the water in which they live and the menu offers a wide variety to customize to your liking. My favorite happen to be the Oysters Rockefeller, perfectly broiled with pernod, creamed spinach, lardon, and herbed parmesan bread crumb. (if you’re not a fan of raw oysters this dish is a great option!) However, I love raw oysters and enjoyed a variety of the flown in fresh oysters on the half shell with delicious house made cocktail sauce and horseradish.
Another fun fact?
These mollusks provide valuable nutrients whether eaten cooked or raw. Since oysters supply a high amount of vitamins B12 and A, they may benefit heart, skin, and brain health. These vitamins also support lung and kidney function. Additionally, oysters benefit the environment since their valves are capable of cleansing an ecosystem of pollutants. In case you needed another reason to visit Modern Oysterbar Chophouse!
So here are my favorite dishes:
Oyster Rockefeller as I mentioned above.
Lobster Bisque: Despite it being 115 degrees outside, I am a sucker for a good lobster bisque. This one did not disappoint. The rich hearty soup with cognac, crème fraiche, chive, and lobster claw & knuckle meat was creamy and filling. I can’t wait to go back in the wintertime and order this and a loaf of crusty bread as a meal!
The Filet! Although you may think of Modern as a seafood restaurant, they offer wet and dry aged steaks that are a for sure “must order” if you’re a meat eater! I highly suggest topping your cut with truffle butter or choose one of the many sauces including red wine bordelaise, au poivre, modern oscar style, béarnaise, sauce diane, cilantro & chile butter, foie gras, or bleu cheese crusted
3 words: Lobster Mac & Cheese. Is that 4 words? Either way, this was one of my favorite things on the menu. Our wonderful waiter reccomended we order it as a side, but it truly could have been an entree. The cheese sauce is the perfecct balance to the delicate lobster meat and let’s be honest, you know I took the rest of this home to have for breakfast the next day and it was still GREAT!
If you’re looking to eat a little lighter and healthier- the salmon with brussels sprouts and green beans are great choices. The salmon was perfectly cooked which is always a gamble when ordering salmon- but not at Modern! The green beans are sauteed in a sauce that lets them maintain their crispiness- another thing that I look for when ordering greenbeans at a restaurant. Both these dishes passed the test with flying colors. Did I mention they tasted amazing too?
So the verdict is, whether you’re celebrating National Oyster Day or looking for a great spot for happy hour, date night, or a night out on the town with friends- Modern Oysterbar Chophouse is a great option and should definatly make it on to you “must visit” list!
