STAYCATION SERIES: HACIENDA DEL SOL

July 25, 2018

As part of my Summer Staycation Series, I was fortunate enough to visit the cutest guest ranch just 2 hours south of the valley- Hacienda del Sol.  Tucked away in the desert hills of Tucson, I found myself falling in love with this amazing property that features the most colorful courtyards and romantic settings. The slightly remote location of the resort with spectacular views of the surrounding Catalina Mountains is the perfect spot to relax and unwind while still being close enough to partake in all that Tucson has to offer including the downtown nightlife (no thanks, I go to bed at 9), hiking trails (I prefer to lounge pool side with a cocktail), museums and galleries (maybe, but not on vacation), golf (too active), shopping (yes, always), and the University of Arizona (hell to the no- #sundevilforlife). You get the idea…the location has something for everyone.

Hacienda del Sol is a destination unto itself with the relaxing private patios, stunning infinity pool, and some of tastiest southwestern inspired food I’ve ever had. Be sure to watch for desert critters including mountain lions, snakes, and roadrunners throughout your visit. We didn’t see any of these but since it was raining, they were likely hiding out- as were we but with better accommodations. The boutique resort has a rich history that is apparent throughout the property. In the 1930’s the property served as a ranch school for the daughters of society’s elite families. I learned that World War II caused the school to go out of business due to a shortage of teachers.  But the resort lived on to become a popular guest ranch, drawing some of the Hollywood stars of the 50’s.  Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, and John Wayne were regulars here.

If you are unlike me and prefer to stay active while on vacay –The Hacienda del Sol offers horseback rides and hiking trails.  If you prefer to relax and totally zone out the resort has a lovely spa and two pools on property.  You know I opted for the relaxation route.

During our stay it happened to be pouring rain which I loved!! There is something very refreshing about watching the storm roll in while sipping a chilled white blend and eating as much cheese and crackers as possible. Serious charcuterie goals here! The staff at the Hacienda del Sol were very friendly and top notch when it came to customer service.

Although I felt like my one night stay at the Hacienda del Sol was far too short- it was enough time to take a break from life and mommy duties and to experience a property that is now on my list of “must go back here” places!
