Continuing on my 2018 staycation series, this past weekend my family and I checked into the Westin Kierland for a 24 staycation. Since the temperature was predicted to be 110 degrees outside, I was certainly looking forward to being in a place that is known for their lively kid friendly pool. Sure enough, Mother Nature provided a scorching weekend but I hardly noticed since I was too busy creating memories in the Westin’s water oasis.
As a mom I find many resorts claim to be “family friendly” but very few take it as seriously as the Kierland Westin. From the energetic Adventure Water Park to the Flowrider surf machine in the middle of the desert, there are tons of offerings for family members of all ages. Speaking of the Flowrider, my brave husband tested his surfing skills (and failed miserably) but had a blast! I guess that’s what you get for growing up in Arizona.
Let’s talk about the pool for a second since that is where we spent most of our time. The huge beach entry was perfect for my almost four year old to wade and splash around while he’s not quite trustworthy to swim on his own. The 900 foot lazy river and 110 foot long waterslide provided lots of water-centric options for the whole family. The splash pad was a big hit with my little guy and my husband and I enjoyed being parked under one of the many umbrellas sipping on adult beverages. If you’re looking for a little splurge, the resort offers cabanas and even a floating Tommy Bahama island.
After about 6 hours of pool time our fingers were starting to resemble raisins so we headed up to the room. The rooms here never disappoint thanks to the Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed. The bed was SO comfy that JZ fell asleep at 6:30PM and slept an astonishing 12 hours straight! If that isn’t reason enough to check in for a stay I don’t know what is.
When it comes to the food and drink at the resort’s signature restaurant Deseo, you can’t go wrong. With nearly a dozen different ceviches including my favorite, the Surf Y Cesped filled with wagyu beef and truffle aioli, do yourself a favor and snag a reservation here whether you’re spending the night or not. Tip: arrive between 5:30-7pm for 30% off the ceviche and fab drink specials. Another thing to put on your radar: the Sweet Shoppe in the lobby every evening. Picture the entire dessert case from AJ’s (but prettier) transported only footsteps from your hotel room. I was quite the happy camper to eat an entire dark chocolate mousse cake from the comfort of my Heavenly Bed as JZ and James slept so nobody could judge me.
Although we aren’t a golfing family, there are great golf deals going on all summer and a ton of other free events to partake in including water balloon games, hula hoop contests, relay races and the popular evening Kierland Kampfire and S’mores.
