I love dessert and I love bbq. What I love even more is when some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had and the tastiest sweet treats are under the same roof in my home town. Welcome to Sugar Jam Bake Shop and Bistro tucked away between industrial warehouses in the Scottsdale Airpark just off of Hayden and Redfield Rd. Sugar Jam is quite possibly my new addiction and not only because the family that runs this place is as sweet as the pies they produce. We visited for lunch but I’m dying to go back for a run at the breakfast menu- the regulars swear by the french toast. For lunch we went with the much talked about BBQ brisket and pulled pork mac and cheese. Both were phenomenal, and I do consider myself a bbq expert being married to a real life Texan. The sauces on each table are family recipes made in house and next time I’m asking for a gallon of the vinegar based “Mojo Sauce” to go. The potato salad and baked beans that come with your meal are equally as delicious. As far as dessert, I can’t really narrow it down to a favorite. Perhaps the warm caramel apple pie or salted caramel cheesecake bites however the red velvet cake and gooey chocolate chip cookies may claim the victory. Word to the wise: bring your appetite and sweet tooth to Sugar Jam. The inside of this cute establishment is an eclectic mix of southern charm meets shabby chic and Dana the owner is the star of the sugary show. Everything is homemade from scratch and made with so much passion you can’t help but fall in love with her, her family, and her food. She’s almost ready to start taking holiday pie order but her pies are worthy of their own blog post so stay tuned for details and flavor options coming next month. Whether you have the time to enjoy a meal at Sugar Jam or are stopping by to grab some quick BBQ to go, as Dana says “Stop by to discover the cravings you never knew you had!”
