I didn’t drink coffee until a few months ago. I always wanted to be one of those cool European looking people that sipped a leisurely hot cup of coffee and read the newspaper in the middle of the day and then I remembered I hate the taste of coffee and have zero time to sit around drinking anything so that thought went out the window and the drive through neighborhood coffee shop emerged. Kona 13 is one of the BEST kept secrets in north Scottsdale. I’m hesitant to write about it because I’m afraid the drive through line will get out of hand and I will have to wait more than 3 min. for my daily dose of magic. A few people who don’t live in Scottsdale have asked me if it’s worth a trip there- YES, the drinks are THAT good. The flavored syrup they use is the secret, it’s not overly sugary and processed tasting- a little birdie told me it’s specifically imported from Hawaii. I’ll tell you exactly what to order and you try telling me it’s not one of the best liquid treats you’ve ever had.
Order the ICED KONA MOUSSE MACADAMIA BREVE WITH A TINY SPLASH OF WHITE CHOCOLATE and AMARETTO (non alcoholic unfortunately) AND LIGHT ON THE ESPRESSO (or if you LIKE coffee, keep the espresso as it comes) skip the whip cream.
The ladies that work there are so polite and overly friendly they might even offer your kid fruit snacks or your dog a puppy treat, but the real treat is the drink you just ordered. The tea is awesome too and I cannot wait for the weather to cool down to try some of the hot goodies on the menu, but as we know in AZ, this could be a few months away.
